Selection of New Crabapple Cultivars Usmg of Crossmg and Open Pollmatun for landscape Use

Abstract
This study was conducted to breed new crabapple cultivars which had superior morphological features, long flowering duration, unique tree form, and disease resistance as woody landscape plants from 1983 to 1992. In the 1-year-old seedling resulted from controlled crossing and open pollination in 1983 and 1984, seedlings with red leaf and weeping form were selected 80 plants, 30 plants respectively in 1st individual selection. And then, SKK 5 and SKK 7, with 1¡2 m tree height, semi-weeping tree form, and pink flowers, were selected as landscape plants with unique tree form. On the other hand, SKK 6 and SKK 8 were selected as clones with dwarf tree size and weeping tree form. SKK 1, SKK 4, and SKK 10 were selected as new landscape plants with beautiful flowers. Although SKK 1 had t7owers that open rose pink color and fade to pink, it had numerous flowers at each inflorescence. While SKK 4 and SKK 10 have rose color flowers unfading. SKK 3 was selected as a clone with unique fruit shape like that of jujube. SKK 14, SKK 15, and SKK 16 were selected because of excellent disease resistance to Alternaria leaf spot, and rust. Due to their disease resistance, it is possible that their leaves retained until late November. Therefore, based on these characteristics, the following new selected crabapple cultivars were found to be promising as woody landscape plants: SKK 1, SKK 3, SKK 4, SKK 5, SKK 6, SKK 7, SKK 8, SKK 10, SKK 14, SKK 15, SKK 16.
